Signed "Adam" wall mirror in frame with floral and gilt cresting, scrolled mounted shaped framing and discoloured gilt ribboned lining, old glass, dated 1741. Mostly good condition with some minor age related deterioration and small missing veneer pieces.
The Adam brothers were Scottish craftsmen whose work set the style for interior architecture and decor for most of the second half of the 18th century and had revivals in the 19th century.
Robert and James Adam travelled in Italy and Dalmatia in the 1750s, observing the ruins of the classical world. On their return to Britain, they aimed to simplify the rococo and baroque styles of architecture and decore which had been fashionable in the preceding decades, to create what they considered to be a lighter and more elegant feel to Georgian homes.
We understand that this is an authentic piece signed by Adam. It is one of several interesting items acquired from an estate that had accompanying older insurance papers describing and identifying the items such as this one.
