"Erewhon" (a partial palindrome of "nowhere") is an 1872 novel by Samuel Butler depicting a utopian satire of Victorian society.

This book is one of the earliest works influenced by Charles Darwin.

Butler was a fan of "On the Origin of the Species" and carried over Darwin's theories of evolution to machines.

George Orwell praised the book for realizing machinery could be dangerous in unprecedented ways, and Gilles Delleuze took a few of the concepts in for use in his philosophy of difference.

This Modern Library edition also includes the follow-up "Erewhon Revisited" with an introduction by Lewis Mumford.
